Tide tables are quiet documents until armies need them. In both world wars, the machines of this archive — America’s No. 2, the Bidston predictors, Hamburg’s Gezeitenrechenmaschinen — ran at full stretch producing predictions for landings, minefields, and harbour operations. Brass became strategy.
1914–1918: the first mobilisation
The Great War multiplied demand for predictions overnight: unfamiliar ports, Gallipoli’s awkward tides, the Zeebrugge raid’s dependence on exact high water. Offices that had predicted one home coastline on a leisurely annual cycle suddenly worked multiple theatres. Operators worked shifts; the pen never cooled. The lesson stuck: tide prediction belonged on the list of dull, decisive capabilities wars are won with.
1939–1945: the industrial years
The Second World War was the machines’ production peak. Allied planning needed tables for hundreds of ports, many never properly analysed — crash gauge deployments, rushed harmonic analyses, and relentless machine runs. Doodson’s Bidston expertise fed directly into Allied planning staffs; the history pillar sketches the scale. Every amphibious landing — North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, the Pacific island-hoppings — carried printed tables whose ancestry runs through a wire-and-pulley adder like the one I draw here.
Secrecy and paper
Tide tables were controlled documents: knowing when your enemy believes the water is high tells you when he will come. Print runs were numbered, distributions logged, obsolete editions burned. Several surviving rolls in archives still bear wartime security stamps — look for them when you visit the collections in my museums guide.
One table, one landing: Normandy
Make it concrete. For the Normandy landings of June 1944, Allied planners needed dawn high water on specific beaches on specific days — landing craft grounding times, obstacle clearance, the whole choreography hung on centimetres and minutes. The requirement ran backwards through the entire pipeline this archive describes: printed tables compiled by clerks from prediction rolls, rolls drawn by machines like Bidston’s and No. 2, machines set by operators from constants that analysts — including Doodson’s people — had extracted from years of gauge records. One beach, one dawn: the labour of a hundred desks and a dozen machines. Multiply by every beach, every theatre, every year of the war, and the “quiet capability” stops looking quiet.
The scale of paper
Wartime production figures are scattered, but the shape is consistent across offices: table output roughly tripled between 1939 and 1944, new ports were analysed on crash schedules, and machines ran multiple shifts — the pen, as one report puts it, “never cooled.” Security stamps on surviving rolls (look for them via my museums guide) show editions numbered and distributions logged like ammunition. Paper moved armies quite literally: without the tables, the landings don’t happen on schedule.
Questions from the workbench
Did the machines predict for D-Day? Allied D-Day planning used the full apparatus of wartime tidal science — Doodson’s methods, Bidston expertise, and machine-produced tables among many inputs. No single machine “chose” the date; the system did.
Did the war advance the science? Enormously — in data (new ports observed), in manpower (analysts trained fast), and in urgency. Then peace handed the expanded workload straight to the incoming digital computers.
Where can I read wartime tables? Naval and hydrographic archives hold them; many are declassified. Compare a 1944 table against a modern prediction for the same port — the agreement is the machines’ memorial.
Paper that moved armies
Tide tables never appear in war memorials, yet every landing beach had its numbers worked out months ahead by machines like the ones in this archive. If that invisibility bothers you, good — it bothered the operators too, who watched their all-night runs dissolve into someone else’s footnote.
