The machines in this archive had operators — mostly men, named in logbooks. But behind every machine stood a larger, quieter workforce doing the arithmetic the brass could not: the human computers, many of them women, who reduced gauge records to constants and rolls to printed tables. This article is for them.

The work no machine could do

Analysers never matured, so every port’s constants came from hand computation: months of ledger arithmetic per port-year, following Darwin’s schedules or, later, Doodson’s least-squares procedures. At the output end, clerks read every high and low water off each inked roll by eye, checked the rhythm, and typeset the booklets navigators carried (see Reading a Printed Table). A single yearly table for one coastline represented thousands of hours of careful figures — the overwhelming majority worked by women whose names rarely reached print.

The offices

Hydrographic offices in Washington, London, Liverpool, and Hamburg all employed computing staffs through the first half of the twentieth century, expanding sharply in wartime when prediction went industrial. Pay was modest, precision was everything, and promotion seldom followed skill across the gender line of the era. Yet the tables never slipped: error rates in published high waters stayed at the minutes-and-centimetres level the machines made possible — a tribute to checking discipline as much as to brass.

Why they vanished from the story

Machine histories photograph machines; the computers (human ones) sat at desks that were never exhibited. When digital computers arrived, the same offices retrained or released these staffs with little ceremony — the second quiet workforce to be retired by the stored program, alongside the operators. Archives hold their worksheets, initialled per page; few hold their biographies. If you descend from a tide-office computer, I want to hear from you.
